March Against Monsanto

Today was the day to March Against Monsanto. All over the world, people took to the streets to stand up and say no to Monsanto, their GMOs and their poisons. There were events in hundreds of cities. I doubt the mainstream media will cover any of it.

I participated in a small event, in the town of Chicopee, MA.  There was a Monsanto plant in Chicopee for years, but thankfully they left.  Long before I ever heard of Round Up or GMOs I knew Monsanto was doing somethingI very evil.  You could not drive by the Monsanto plant without rolling up your windows and holding your breath.  It smelled that foul.  That must have been when they were making Agent Orange..or DDT or some other horrible chemical concoction.  Monsanto has a long history of profiting from poison.

In any case, Chicopee knows Monsanto well, so I went there.  Despite the miserable, cold rain that poured down most of the day, well over a hundred people arrived at the Christ’s Community Church Hall on schedule.  Many thanks to Cheryl Anne who did a great job organizing the event.  Local organic farmers and businesses had been invited to set up tables and share samples and information about their products.

IMG_0530I was particularly interested in the display of ingredients which can be used to make your own cleaning products. They had recipes for laundry soap and other simple ideas.

They also had some information about organic companies whose parent companies are working against labeling GMOs.

SubstandardFullSizeRenderHere is a photo of the list. I am sure more information is available online.

They then showed the film, Genetic Roulette.

IMG_0532It is a documentary about the health effects of GMOs and Round Up Ready crops. Chilling stuff. Doctors are starting to see a connection between GMO foods and cancer, diabetes, heart disease, autism, food allergies, intestinal problems…the list goes on and on. It is definitely a film worth seeing. It may be online.

By now we were all fired up and ready to March.  We got our signs and headed back outside into the rain.  We marched to City Hall.  Unfortunately, the media who were coming to cover the event, canceled.  But that didn’t stop us.

IMG_3187Many passing cars honked approvingly. One even stopped to ask questions about Monsanto.

The word is getting out.

IMG_0531I do not expect Monsanto to go out of business tomorrow. This will be a long fight. But it is clear that more and more people are becoming aware of what is happening to our food. Maybe even more people will ask questions after seeing us today. We will demand more Organic food. We will shop locally. We will not support companies who work to profit from poison. We will insist GMO food be labeled..or better yet banned. Today was just the beginning.

Wow! What a great write up about the event. Thank you for writing this beautiful piece and for continuing to bring awareness to this critical issue. 🙂

you are so right, I think things are starting to change . I think people are starting to realise and it will be a long fight but we will get there. I would have loved to march but nothing anywhere near Newcastle upon tyne, England and no funds to travel but loved reading about your day – I am doing as much as I can trying to pass the message on and sharing seeds and boycotting anything linked to gmo’s. much love

We are all doing all we can and together that adds up to a lot. Monsanto has noticed. They don’t like it. It is not part of their plan. They have quite a few tricks up their sleeves no doubt, but if we stay strong and stay together, we will win.

    Patti,
looks like it was great which I could have been there. Funny thin this old man saw my bumper sticker against Monsanto at the show and make a comment that if it wasn’t for Monsanto there would be no air craft carriers. Don’t know what that was all about but I commented right back and he went away!!!! Now if we can make Monsanto go away that easily. The world is against them now.
Thanks for sharing all those interesting things.

No air craft carriers? That is a new one on me. But I could live without aircraft carriers to be perfectly honest. I would much prefer to have healthy food. And an environment with birds and bees. It was a good event. Try to watch Genetic Roulette. I found it at amazon, you can watch it for $2.99 I think. It is very well done and it will make you think very hard about what you put in your mouth.

Your article was very well done…thanks for standing with us. It will be a long road but the more people are made aware of GMO’s… the more people will stand up and take notice.

    • pattigail says:

We are the ones we have been waiting for. We will stand together and others will join us. Once they realize what Monsanto is up to. Remember the Tobacco companies? That fight took years too, but once the word was out everything changed. We will not let Monsanto poison our food supply. If you eat food, this affects you. So that is everybody.

  7. Dorothy Przystas says:

My husband and I both attended this march. The organizers did an excellent job and they deserve a huge pat on the back for their efforts. Thank -you for posting this great well written article on the event. We have to keep on fighting and informing. I would like to become more involved of any future events in the Chicopee area.

Welcome to Brookwood Shire! Hopefully there will be more events. I have no connection with the people who sponsored the event, but they have a Facebook page. At least they did. Massachusetts is trying to label GMOs…I think there is something in Boston on the11th. Keep checking the internet and Facebook. The mainstream media is not very informative about this.
