Just thought I would let everyone know that Fergus is home again after his surgery. It turned out the tooth wasn’t actually broken, it was just worn. (understandable for a Lab of his age) The X-rays didn’t show that it was the tooth that had actually caused the abscess. So they didn’t remove it. This made his recovery very easy. All they did was clean his teeth. So that is the good news.
So what caused the abscess? That is the question. They did see a somewhat suspicious mass in his sinus cavity, right where the abscess was. But it wasn’t clear what it was. They sent the X-rays to a radiologist but he wasn’t sure either. It could be cancer. If it is, it is not operable because of its location. So if it is, there isn’t much to be done. The radiologist recommended an MRI. But aside from the expense, that would be a long drive and another very unfun day for Fergus. And since there is no treatment for it, it wouldn’t change anything.
The only other thing we can think of is that a piece of stick or something somehow worked its way in there and caused the abscess. It is possible, my Vet has seen that before. That would be treated with antibiotics..which we are doing .
Fergus is feeling fine and very happy. He has not missed a meal and he has gotten quite a few extra treats.
He gets his walk every day.
His couch is still available for daily naps.
And he gets his chewy every night after his supper. He is a happy boy.
While his future may be uncertain, for now things are back to normal for Fergus and life is good again. And that will have to be enough. In the end, that is all there is……for any of us.
