The Incredibly Shrinking Coco

Fall is upon us now and the nights grow colder.   It was just about this time of year, six years ago, that my Vet found little Merlin.  His mother, probably feral, had abandoned him. He was  about three weeks old.  It was a very cold night and as my Vet was leaving the clinic she heard a kitten meowing loudly. It was dark, but she followed the sound and found him. He was very cold. If she had not found him, he probably would have died. But that was not his fate. He was found and by a veterinarian who was able to give him warm fluids and nurse him back to life. Because he was all alone, with no mother or siblings, my Vet gave him Coco.

Coco is a stuffed dog. Merlin slept with him from the day he was found. They were like siblings.
When he was old enough, Merlin came to live at Brookwood Shire.

Image 1Coco, of course, came with him.

Merlin loved it.  There were lots of warm places to sleep.

Including with  Fergus.  He had a sibling at last!  Would he forget  Coco?

IMG_0365Didn’t seem so.

Merlin and Coco settled in fine.

Fergus was a welcome playmate.
At least most of the time.

Unless he tried to take Coco. Coco was not to be shared!

Merlin would  “rescue” Coco.  And then all would be well again.

But then a strange thing began to happen.  Coco began to shrink!  Merlin always brought Coco along, wherever he was going.  It was a struggle at first.  Merlin would have to drag him since they were about the same size.  But it became easier and easier as Coco got smaller and smaller.

Merlin could now easily put Coco in the water dish..a nightly ritual.. for a bath or for a drink I am not sure.

And Coco fit easily behind the wood stove, a lovely warm place.

It was no longer necessary to drag Coco. He was very easy to carry.

What was happening?!

It has not changed Merlin’s affection for Coco.  Six years on, he continues to include Coco on his nightly rounds.  He continues to insist that NO ONE else touch Coco!  Coco remains very special to Merlin….

….no matter how small he gets.
