A Blizzard is Coming

A blizzard is coming. Tomorrow into Saturday. The weather people are certain. Though they have been wrong before. A blizzard in New England in February is not really news. It has happened many times before.

IMG_2001 But possibly not like this one. Climate Change, which is sometimes vaguely implied, but still something “that cannot be named” like Voldemort in the Harry Potter stories, is creating extreme storms. There is more moisture in the air and the jet stream is changing. So now storms always seem to involve more than one system, all joining together and causing HUGE storms.

IMG_2002We are expecting over a foot of snow with very strong winds. Most schools are already closed for tomorrow and people are being asked to stay home and to prepare for possible power outages.

So we spent the day getting ready. We are very happy that we have a wood stove now. Having a way to heat your home when the power fails is becoming more and more important.

IMG_2183We filled the wood rack near the stove,

IMG_2185by the fireplace,

IMG_2198and just outside the door.

We didn’t have to worry too much about stocking up on food.

IMG_2201Last year we started a pantry in the cellar. No matter what happens with supermarket deliveries, we will be ok for awhile.

IMG_2200Simple foods keep well and can be used in soups or stews…cooked on the wood stove if necessary.

IMG_2197We also filled the birdfeeders. We are not the only inhabitants of Brookwood Shire.

IMG_2194And this storm will affect all.

The girls are in the coop under the stairs.

IMG_2050They will be warmer and it will be much easier for me to feed them and to collect eggs in the middle of a blizzard.

Fergus isn’t worried.

IMG_2068And I think I know where Merlin will be.

Tomorrow will be another reminder that we do not control Nature. The lives we live, so dependent on technology and convenience are not sustainable. We can do better.

Stay safe tomorrow everyone!

  1. Glad to see you are well prepared for the storm and will all be nice and cozy inside together! Take care. I hope it isn’t a bad storm.

That Merlin is a character. Fergus will be fine and so will the girls. I am leaving the barn door open tonight but know I will have to close it tomorrow. My friend Susan said some places will get 3 feet.
I am also glad you got the stove.
    Keep safe

I am glad we got the stove as well. It makes all the difference….with an electric stove and furnace we are somewhat helpless without electricity. I hope we don’t lose power, but if we do we will be ok. And having the girls in the cellar makes things a LOT easier…as you know all too well. Hang in and keep safe. Patti

  4. Follow Merlin and Fergus’ lead, relax, take a nap and read a book… hope to se you Sunday.

What happened to the spaces? Sorry about that.
